Neck and Back Pain

Treatment for neck and back pain

Neck and back pain are incredibly common—most adults will experience some level of discomfort at multiple points in their lives. When pain becomes chronic or recurring, it can feel overwhelming, especially when the cause isn’t clear. Beyond the personal toll, neck and back pain have a wider economic impact in the UK, costing billions of pounds due to increased NHS demands and decreased workplace productivity, largely from employee absenteeism.

At Staplehurst Chiropractic, we work to identify the underlying causes of pain, providing effective, personalised care to help our clients achieve relief and prevent future discomfort.

At Staplehurst Chiropractic, we believe neck and back pain shouldn’t be a disruptive part of life. While back pain can have many causes, the most common type is ‘mechanical,’ meaning it often isn’t due to a serious underlying condition but rather to factors within your control. Back pain is one of the primary reasons clients seek chiropractic care, and our highly trained chiropractors specialise in identifying and treating its causes.

Following a thorough medical history and examination, our chiropractors can accurately diagnose the issue and create a personalised treatment plan. Our mission is to empower as many people as possible with hands-on care and education, helping them avoid disruptions to daily life and regain confidence in their movement.

As a long-established clinic, we take pride in our excellent reputation, serving Staplehurst and neighbouring areas, including Maidstone, Marden, Cranbrook, Sutton Valence, Benenden, Hawkhurst, and Goudhurst.

Mechanical Neck and Back Pain

The spine serves as the body’s central support system and primary protection for the spinal cord. It comprises 24 vertebrae, cushioned by intervertebral discs and connected through facet joints. At its base, the spine is anchored by the sacrum and pelvis, held together by ligaments and supported by muscles and tendons.

Mechanical back pain arises when imbalances or stresses affect these interconnected structures, often leading to weakness, stiffness, reduced mobility, pain, or inflammation. Common causes of mechanical back pain include lifestyle factors such as prolonged sitting, repetitive joint use, pregnancy, trauma, or injuries.

Acute neck or back pain refers to pain that arises suddenly and lasts less than six weeks. This early stage is often the ideal time to seek chiropractic care; although the pain may be intense, it is usually isolated, making it easier to identify and address the root cause. As with any issue in the body, the longer a problem persists, the harder it can be to resolve. The body often compensates for structural imbalances, which may provide temporary relief but can lead to recurring issues, sometimes even causing symptoms elsewhere in the body.

For instance, knee pain may actually stem from lower back dysfunction, headaches can develop from prolonged neck stiffness, and nerve pain in the arms or legs (such as sciatica) is often linked to spinal issues. Even shoulder and elbow pain can relate to spinal imbalances.

Chronic pain, defined as pain lasting longer than six months, is another common reason clients seek our help. While chronic issues may be more complex, chiropractic care remains highly beneficial in addressing the underlying causes. After a thorough assessment, your chiropractor may recommend additional investigations if needed, but in most cases, a blend of hands-on treatment and guided rehabilitation will support effective recovery.
