Bulging and Herniated Disc Pain

Treatment for disc pain

Commonly known as a ‘slipped’ disc, a bulging or herniated disc can develop either gradually or very suddenly. In our clinic, clients often describe situations where the pain seemed to come “out of nowhere”—sometimes triggered by something as simple as reaching for an item in the shower. This sudden onset can leave them feeling misaligned, in severe pain, and struggling to stand or walk.

The good news is that, in most cases, chiropractic care can significantly help reduce pain and inflammation associated with disc herniations, providing effective relief and supporting the body’s natural healing process. With the added benefit of guidance and advice, chiropractic care can also help reduce the risk of reoccurrence.

The discs between the vertebrae act as crucial cushions, absorbing the forces and impacts of daily activities. Whether we’re sitting, running, bending, lifting, or even coughing and laughing, these discs protect the joints and nerves by absorbing pressure. Given how often we make these movements daily, it’s clear just how much stress our discs endure. Made up of about 70% water and surrounded by strong fibres, each disc’s structure is designed to contain and stabilise its fluid centre, allowing it to handle these repeated demands.

Disc herniation often develops gradually, with pressure building over weeks, months, or even years. Poor repetitive movement patterns—such as bending from the back instead of the hips or lifting without engaging the core—can contribute to this process. Over time, the central gel-like substance of the disc may push through its surrounding fibres, leading to inflammation. This type of injury can progress through various stages, often causing symptoms such as shooting pain, numbness, or muscle weakness.

At Staplehurst Chiropractic, disc-related pain is one of the most common issues we treat. Our chiropractors are highly experienced in managing disc herniations, focusing on reducing pressure on the affected disc, calming muscle spasms, and addressing any contributing dysfunctions elsewhere in the body. This comprehensive approach helps clients achieve relief and supports the disc’s recovery process.
